Gate tokens represent tears in the fabric of reality. These gateways can lead to other worlds, dimensions, or even points in time. These dangerous anomalies allow deadly powers into our world, such as Monsters and eventually even the Ancient Ones. Gates are mostly specific to locations that have unique pictures by their name. This includes major cities like Rome, or places where an Expedition Encounter can take place like The Pyramids. Mountains of Madness, Under the Pyramids, and The Dreamlands have side boards with spaces where Gates may spawn.
All Gates have one of three symbols on them that correspond to the Omen. When the omen rotates to that symbol, Doom advances by 1 for each Gate that bears the symbol. Gates do NOT advance Doom when spawned, even if the Omen corresponds with that Gate.
The Gate stack is created by randomizing all the Gate tokens, including those for a Side Board if playing with them, then placing them facedown. Gates are kept facedown in the Gate stack until they are spawned, however, there are some exceptions:
- Akachi Onyele's ability allows to look at the top 2 Gates in the Gate stack and change their order.
- Find Gate Spell allows to play with the top Gate of the Gate stack revealed.
- Randolph Carter Unique Asset allows to reveal the top Gate of the stack and put it on the bottom.
- When using Dream Portals, you may look the first 3 Gates of the Gate stack.
It's possible that multiple Gates be on the same space. In this case, on the Encounter Phase, an investigator may choose one of the Gates to encounter.[1]
Spawning Gates[]
When an effect spawns a Gate, draw one Gate token from the top of the Gate stack and place it faceup on the space indicated on the Gate token. When a Gate is spawned, a Monster is spawned on the same space. Gates are most commonly opened when spawned by a Mythos card when the appropriate symbol appears on the top part of the card, always occurring on the cards with yellow backgrounds.
They may be opened through certain Rumor Mythos cards, through a failed Encounter, or some condition effects.
When there are no Gates remaining in the Gate stack, place all discarded Gates facedown in the Gate stack and randomize them. If a Gate cannot be spawn because the Gate stack and discard pile are empty, advance Doom by 1 instead.
Closing Gates[]
- Main article: Other World Encounters
During the Encounter Phase, an investigator on a space containing a Gate may encounter it by drawing and resolving an Other World Encounter. Typically, one skill check is needed initially, and the player gets two different encounters depending on whether or not they pass or fail this check. Some encounters, however, allow the player to choose which of the two effects to resolve. Many Other World Encounters allow the player to close the Gate. If this happens, the Gate token is removed from the board and put into a discard pile.
However, there are some other ways to close Gates including:
- During the resolution of a Mystic Ruins Encounter.
- The resolution of a Location Encounter (e.g. Plateau of Leng Encounters).
- An effect on the back of certain Conditions or Tasks (e.g. Sealing the Old Ones).
- An investigator's ability (e.g. Kate Winthrop).
- A card when gained (e.g. Enoch Bowen).
Discarding a Gate is not considered closing it, although closing a Gate does cause it to be discarded.[2]
Revealing Gates[]
When an effect reveals a Gate, change one Gate token from the top of the Gate stack to a faceup position. Revealed Gates remain where they are in the Gate stack unless the effect that causes the Gates to be revealed states otherwise.
If an effect would cause a number of Gates to be revealed that exceeds the number of Gates in the Gate stack, the active investigator randomizes the Gates in the discard pile and places them at the bottom of the Gate stack before resolving that effect.
After a Gate in the Gate stack has been revealed, it remains revealed until it is removed from the Gate stack or the Gate stack is randomized.[2]
Revealing a Gate that has previously been revealed has no additional effect. This won't stop other effects from manipulating those Gates; for instance, Randolph Carter will be able to put the top Gate on the bottom of the Gate stack if desired, even if the top Gate has already been revealed by some other effects.[3]
